Salt & Clay

The exhibitionFive sculptors from the False Bay coast, and a lot of sea air.

Fig. 1Nomvula Sithole, Tide Jar III, 2026, salt-glazed stoneware, 64 × 41 cm

The sea does half the work. I just pick things up and bake them.

Nomvula Sithole · Kalk Bay

Five people, one stretch of coast, and a lot of clay.

Nomvula, Bongani, Chantal, Kobus and Zaid all live within spitting distance of False Bay, and it shows. There are salt-glazed pots, a bronze bait bucket, and a seal that Chantal swears is not her ex.

Come have a look. Ask who made what and why. We’ll put the kettle on.

Four people who make things

Ask Mo for the long versions. She has time.

Thandi Mokoena

Ceramics · Mitchells Plain

Thandi makes giant ceramic heads in her garage in Mitchells Plain. Her neighbours have stopped asking.

She fires them in a kiln she built from a pizza-oven kit and a YouTube video. Every head is somebody from her street, and nobody gets to see theirs until it’s done. Three are here now. The biggest one needed four guys and a bakkie to get through the door.

Piet Jacobs

Feature 02 of 04 · Found objects & bronze · Hout Bay

Piet welds bits of old fishing boats into seagulls. He gets seasick on the ferry.

Thirty years as a fitter and turner, then he made a bird out of a broken winch and couldn’t stop. He casts the beaks in bronze because “a gull without a proper beak is just a pigeon with ambition.”

Feature 03 of 04 · Oil on linen · Salt River

Amina paints her aunties’ kitchens in Salt River, one tablecloth at a time. She does not take requests.

Big oils, thick paint, lots of blue-and-white china. She paints from memory and, she says, from smell. Ask her about the one with the burnt koeksisters. She’ll tell you it’s a self-portrait.

Amina Davids

Feature 04 of 04 · Gouache · Khayelitsha

Lwazi Ndlovu

Lwazi paints taxi ranks in gouache on the backs of old till slips. His studio is the front seat of a Quantum.

He collects slips from the spaza on his corner, paints the 6am rush on his way to work, and sells them for about the price of a takeaway. Small, quick and annoyingly good.

A small manifesto · p. 31

Art shouldn’t need a dress code.

  • No velvet ropes. Just really good stuff made by people who live here.
  • Touch with your eyes. Ask about everything else.
  • Open Tuesday to Saturday, or whenever the kettle’s on.
